WELCOME TO THE 155TH EUROPEAN STUDY GROUP WITH INDUSTRY THAT WILL TAKE PLACE AT THE POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE OF LEIRIA, IN PORTUGAL FROM 1ST OF JULY TO 5TH OF JULY 2019.
A study group is a week-long workshop bringing together mathematicians and companies.
A number of challenges will be presented by companies. In the first day academic participants allocate themselves to a group, each of which works in one of the challenges along with the corresponding industrial partner. On the last day, each group will make a presentation of the results obtained and make suggestions for further work. After the study group, a report on each problem will be sent to the corresponding company which may contain suggestions for further collaboration.
More information on study groups and related aspects is available at the International Study Groups website and the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry. For a list of previous ESGI in Portugal please visit the PT-MATHS-IN website.

Companies
Companies have the possibility to benefit from the insights gained through mathematical analysis of their problems. The ESGI are ideal for companies that are new to cooperation with the academia.
We will be more than happy to visit you, at no cost and without any need for an immediate commitment, for an initial discussion about formulating a problem. Almost all industrial problems have some intrinsic mathematical aspect, although the mathematics is not always recognisable at a first glance. Indeed, from our own experience, some of the most successful study group problems were not well-defined in mathematical terminology at the beginning of the study group.
If you think that your company might have something to gain from discussing a problem with us, do not hesitate:
The confidentiality of the data provided is guaranteed.
The costs of participating as a company will depend on the size of the enterprise.
academics
Study groups provide a unique opportunity for academics to work with industry to come up with new ideas and potential solutions for real world problems.
Academic participants (students, researchers, professors) with expertise in mathematical fields such as Operations Research, Optimization, Statistics, Numerical Analysis, Computer Sciences, Physics, Finances, Data Analysis, among others, are welcome.
There is no fee for academic participants.
[Registration is now available below]
students
Student participation (BSc, MSc or PhD) is strongly encouraged and it may be possible to cover the participation expenses of some students.
If you want to apply for financial support, please contact the organizing committee, attaching a motivation letter and a short CV.
Challenges
Here you can see the challenges that will be analysed during the 155th ESGI week.
CHALLENGE 1 | Fravizel - www.fravizel.com
A slab of stone is fed to a pneumatic crushing machine equipped with a moving hammer head. After every hit of the hammer, the crushed stone is analysed in terms of the cross section of the fragments. If a fragment has an area greater than a prescribed maximum value the hammer should move to its position and hit it again. The challenge is to optimize the crushing process in terms of speed by minimizing the time required for the hammer to change position between two hits.
CHALLENGE 2 | Moldetipo - www.moldetipo.pt
Plastic injection molding is vastly used in today’s manufacturing industry. In injection molding process, the cooling channel performance is one of the most crucial factors because it has significant effect on both production rate and the quality of the plastic part. In order to reduce the cycle time and control the uniform distribution of temperature, it is necessary to create conformal cooling channels which conform to the shape of the mold cavity and core. The challenge is to create a mathematical model for automatic generation of optimized conformal cooling channels according to the part profile to ensure faster cooling and uniform heat extraction through the part.
CHALLENGE 3 | Poço – Equipamentos Industriais, SA - www.eip.pt
The challenge is to develop a mathematical model which allows to calculate in a transparent and clearly away the variable amount of fees that each Company has to pay to the Portuguese Social Security in order to take into account its contribution to add value. The model proposed won’t change the general value currently calculated considering 23.75% x Global Salaries. It will distinguish Companies that add value and contribute to improve the competitiveness and productivity not only of Portuguese Companies but also of Portugal.
CHALLENGE 4 | Vipex - www.vipex.pt
Vipex is producing a large container lid in conditions considered to be not possible by the existing simulation software’s (ex: Moldflow). We are seeking to identify and understand the factors which enabled us to achieve our product and process targets. These factors will be used in future product developments to optimize the injection process: mould x machine x raw material.
